“Your life is as good as your mindset.”

For many people, when they hear the word minimalism, they immediately think of decluttering and getting rid of stuff. While decluttering and simplifying your life are absolutely two essential aspects of minimalism, it is so much more.

Yes, in order to simplify, one of the most important things to do is to declutter your space. Remove the “things” in your home that no longer serve you. But, that is just scratching the surface of minimalism.

It goes so much deeper.

What Is A Minimalist Mindset?

Along this amazing road to embracing a minimalist life, I learned that the most essential part of becoming a minimalist is to change your mindset.

Here is the thing: you can get rid of everything you own but if you do not change the way that you think, you will wind up filling your space back up with clutter and things you don’t need. If you want to truly change your life and learn to live with less, you need to develop a minimalist mindset.

So, what is a minimalist mindset?

Having a minimalist mindset is about being intentional. It is about digging deeper inside yourself and changing what’s in there. It is about deciding that material possessions will no longer rule your life and focusing instead on relationships, time, hobbies and anything that brings you joy.

A minimalist mindset is what happens when you spend your days living more purposefully. More deliberately. More in tune with what you need rather than what society tells you.

When you are able to see beyond the “stuff” and the “things” that are filling your world and taking up space in your mind, you will feel such a sense of peace and calm.

In order to really live a minimalist life, you need to figure out why you let the clutter build up and what you are going to do to keep it away.

Not only will a minimalist mindset make you happier and bring more calm to your life, it will change the way you shop, the people you chose to keep in your life and how you spend your time.

Minimalism has no rules. There is no right or wrong way to be a minimalist. What is important is that you remove anything that doesn’t bring you joy so you can grow and thrive.

Now, let’s discuss three tips for beginning to shift to a minimalist mindset!

1. Make gratitude a daily practice.

Here’s the thing: we live in a world that is constantly telling us that we need more. That what we have isn’t good enough. That we aren’t pretty enough, rich enough or social enough. Because of this, it can be hard to realize that if you look around, you already have everything that you need.

Sure, each of us have something we want to change in our life. But at the end of the day, life is beautiful. Regardless of the size of your home or the size of your waist.

Start by sitting down, each day, and writing down 3 things you are grateful for. Soon, you will start to see that you really have so much to be thankful for. This is a perfect way to start thinking like a minimalist.

2. Quality over quantity, always.

Whether you are dealing with physical items, relationships or commitments, deciding to focus on quality over quantity is an amazing way to change your mindset. I used to be someone who felt like I needed 100 friends in my life, instead of fostering a handful of amazing and beautiful friendships.

As often as you can, weed out the negative and toxic people or things in your life and only keep the positive and healthy. Prioritize these things, always!

3. Let go of unnecessary and unwanted things from your home and your life.

Declutter. Donate. Throw away. Hand down.

Whatever you have to do, let go of all of the unnecessary and unwanted things from your home and your life. When you remove these things, whether it is old decor, toxic friends or clothes from 10 years ago, you are creating more space in your life for the things that do matter. And do bring you joy. Declutter as often as you need to, it is an ongoing process!
