“Each day of our lives, we make deposits in the memory banks of our children.” – Charles R. Swindoll
Traveling with kids can be difficult. It can also be extremely rewarding!
When my dad was sick and in the hospital last year, we packed ourselves and our daughter into our Honda Civic and drove from NJ to FL.

To be honest, I was so stressed about the trip. I knew it was going to be a long time in the car and I wanted it to be a positive experience for all of us. Otherwise, I may never be brave enough to try it again.
I spent numerous days before we left searching the internet for every idea I could find to make the trip a success. I read articles, I took advice from other moms, I cried a little and then I decided on a few key things I needed.
By the time we got in the car to leave, I was prepared for anything. Truly, anything. I may have drove my husband crazy but in the end, we had such a fun time on the road and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Seriously, I am patting myself on the back for this one.
During the summer, so many families take time off of work and responsibilities and travel. There are so many ways to get to your destination, from a car or a bus to a train or an airplane.
No matter where you’re going or how you’re getting there, having a plan in place so the kids are occupied and happy is essential. I mean it. It’s essential. Don’t go on that Disney World trip without a plan. You will regret it.
If you are in the midst of planning a trip or even leaving tomorrow, I want to share with you my list of the eight must-haves for traveling with the kids!
Road Trip Lego Boxes
Okay, I put this first on my list because of how practical they are and how easy they are to make. With only six supplies necessary, this can be a fun project to sit down and make with the little ones before leaving on your adventure. Also, what kids won’t be interested in playing with legos in the car? But with this handy dandy box, you don’t have to worry about a huge mess and it gives them a surface to play on. A genius idea from Housewife Eclectic!
Portable DVD Player
This was a lifesaver on our trip. I’m telling you, lifesaver. We brought a bag of her favorite DVDs and in between stops or different activities, we would put on the DVD player and she was occupied. Now, the batteries don’t last forever in these things so if I were you, I would spread out the time the kids use it. These little beauties are such a good investment for traveling.
Travel Activity Station
This adorable activity station is perfect for any vacation or trip. Filled with art supplies for your budding Picasso, this must have will keep your little ones entertained for hours. Hooking onto the back of a seat with a strap, you can take this awesome product with you almost anywhere! I kind of want one for myself, no judgements.
Kids’ Cooler And Snack Tray
Yes, yes and yes! A little different from the activity tray, this snack tray sits in the back seat with your little ones and doubles as a cooler. Awesome right? A necessity for a long trip are snacks and lots of them. We like to pack sandwiches and have them ready for a quick lunch. A hungry child or a hangry husband makes for a not fun trip for anyone involved.
Travel Scavenger Hunt
One way to break up a long trip is to have fun playing games. You can come up with games on your own, like seeing how many states’ license plates you can find, or you can buy something like this scavenger hunt card game. We love playing games in the car, the longer the ride the more games we play!
Travel Neck Pillow
I don’t know about you but I love sleeping in the car. Luckily, my daughter got that from me and when we were on our road trip she slept a few times. Unfortunately, the only thing we thought to bring was her pillow from home and she had such a hard time getting comfortable. Next time, I will still bring her pillow for when we are at our final destination but I will be grabbing one of these neck pillows for her. I will probably grab one for myself too!
Suction Cup Shower Caddy
No, I promise I haven’t officially lost it. Stick with me here. These shower caddies will stick to any clean surface, such as the window in the car. BOOM! Stick one of these caddies on the window and you have a beautiful storage space for your children’s things. By things I mean crayons, goldfish, DVDs or anything in between. A mom friend told me about this idea and I think it is SO good! Plus they are inexpensive which makes it even better.
Yes, a map. I wish I had thought of this sooner but I will definitely have one of these bad boys with us on our next adventure. How fun would it be to track your progress, especially on a long car ride, from state to state? The kids will love this and will have fun seeing where you are, where you are going next, and how long until your destination. Put one of these in your cart! The one I have linked is also a place mat, win win!
Well, there you have it! My holy grail choices for a successful and stress free trip with the kids. What is one thing you think is a must have for traveling with the little ones?
