How We Save Around $350 a Month in Groceries

Yes, you read that right! We really do save about $350 in groceries every month.

When we first started on our long road to alleviate our debt, we sat down and decided things we could cut and one of the things we found was the amount of money we were spending on groceries each month. On a normal week, we were spending around $180-$200 in groceries, which is insane now that I think back to that time! We knew there had to be a way to save money on the food we buy and still eat what we like.

One store we had heard about a lot was Aldi! I had been told, and read, that the company was changing the quality of the products they sell while still maintaining the low cost. We were hesitant because we are definitely the type of people who like what we know and the brands that we are used to! Our idea was to go one week, buy what we normally would and try the food as well as see how much we could actually save. Well, I can tell you that 99% of the food we got tasted exactly the same as the food at ShopRite, Wegmans or any other grocery store at half the price! We haven’t looked back since!

It has made such a world of difference to save the amount of money we do! We have been able to put that money into paying off debt and normal expenses. I want to share a few of the ways that we have been able to cut our grocery bill and save!

Shop at Aldi

On a typical week, we spend between $80 and $100 at Aldi! We buy all the food that we like, and even some extras of course!, and are still under our budget for food. I am working on a post now that will compare the prices at Aldi, ShopRite and Wegmans! If there are any specific products you would like me to show, let me know!

Make a menu and a shopping list

This has been monumental for us in changing the way we buy groceries! Each Thursday is our grocery day so I make sure I make a menu for the upcoming week. Once I have picked out the meals we are going to have, I go through our cabinets and fridge and figure out what we need for the meals. Next I check and see what food we get each week like bread, milk, juice, etc and if we need it, add it to the list! We take a notebook to the store and do our best to stick to the list! Of course there are times we throw in some extra treats or something new to try, but on a whole we are good about staying with the list!

Add up costs while you are shopping

This is something that my husband started doing and we do it every week now! On the paper that I have written the menu and the shopping list, we write down the price of each item and add it all up. If we are on the lower end for cost, we may add a few extras that aren’t on the list. Joey rounds up to the dollar for each price and it really helps keep us on the right track!

Shop at multiple stores

When a lot of people think about going grocery shopping, they want to just get it done and over with. I can say that I am that way too! I don’t mind going to the store but it isn’t my favorite! Something that can save money, however, is shopping around for the best prices. Head to a local farmers market and buy your produce from there. Also check out Walmart, their prices are reasonable, you just have to be careful what you buy! It may take more time, but your budget will thank you!
