“Hygge: A ritual where one can find enjoyment and comfort in life’s simple pleasures.” – Calm

Hygge, pronounced hoo-guh, is a Danish term for a feeling. It is the concept of creating a cozy atmosphere in your home and a feeling of contentment and happiness.

Basically, my life goals.

Since starting on this journey to a more simple and minimalist lifestyle a few months ago, one place I have truly focused a lot of my time and energy on is my home. The place where my family and I spend the majority of our time and where we love to be.

5 Ways You Can Bring Hygge Into Your Home This Fall!

My husband and I are the definition of introverts. I like spending small spurts of time with others but for the most part, I am the happiest in our tiny apartment.

After an evening with friends, no matter how much fun I had or the amazing company I was with, I need AT LEAST two days home to recoup.

I never saw that side of my daughter until her birthday when we had the grandparents and other family members over for pizza, cake and gifts. About two hours after everyone arrived, she walked over to me and whispered in my ear that she wanted to go to bed.

Yes, in the middle of her own birthday celebration.

And what did I do? I told her sure and let her go in her room where she feels the most comfortable. She needed some time to just be and that was perfectly fine with me.

For me, my home is my sanctuary.

Home is not just the physical place where you live but it is the one place in the world where you can go to feel at peace. Where you can go to shut out the world and be yourself. Home is where your heart is.

My goal is to create an atmosphere at home that is inviting, comforting and peaceful. A home that, one day, my daughter will want to come back to even when she is all grown up and on her own.

I first heard about hygge last year and was immediately drawn to this way of life. I have read a few books, researched hygge and learned how to realistically apply this lifestyle into my home.

When the leaves begin to change color and the temperatures start to cool off, I get so excited! Autumn is my favorite time of the year and the perfect time to really incorporate hygge into your life.

Cozy up, get comfortable and let me share with you five ways that you can bring this amazing way of life into your home this Fall!

1. Light some candles.

One of the best ways to bring the feeling of hygge into your home is to light candles. Especially in the evenings, I like to turn out the lights and only have a few candles lit. After a stressful day with the kids or at work, it is such a peaceful way to end the day. Go for seasonal scents and place them all around the room.

2. Open the windows and use a blanket.

After dinner, when the weather is chilly but not too cold, open a few windows and break out your favorite blankets. Cuddle up on the couch and read a book or watch a TV show. It is both invigorating and calming to just relax under a comfortable blanket while you feel the cool breeze.

3. Drink hot tea.

After you light your candles but before you get under your blanket, put on the tea kettle and brew some decaf tea. Drinking tea always makes me feel comfortable and at peace. I even give my daughter Sleepytime Tea some nights when she is feeling too rambunctious to wind down.

4. Cook dinner and sit down at the table with loved ones.

Whether your loved ones are family or friends, spending time with those you love brings a feeling of happiness and contentment. Even if it is just you and your significant other, grab a cookbook and find a new meal to cook together. I love setting the table with plates, silverware, condiments and serving dishes for the food. Sit at the table, eat some delicious food and chat about your day. This is a wonderful way to connect and spend time!

5. Decorate your home for the season.

Last but definitely not least is decorating your home for the season. Put out the pumpkins, fill your home with the scents of fall and get out all of your other fall decor. There is nothing like being surrounded by beautiful reminders of the season you are in.

This fall, join me on the journey to a simple life. Come with me as we explore a different way of living and learning to find peace in your everyday, whatever that may look like for you.

Have you ever heard of hygge? What is one way you can bring this lifestyle into your home this season?
