5 Ways To Have A Minimalist Thanksgiving

When you think of Thanksgiving, what comes to your mind?

Do you instantly think of the delicious turkey you will eat? Or does your mind go directly to the people you will be spending the beautiful holiday with?

For me, the first thing I think of is memories. Memories of Thanksgiving as a child. Memories of Thanksgiving when my daughter was a newborn.

Memories that we will make on Thanksgiving in the future.

5 Ways To Have A Minimalist Thanksgiving

If you are someone who hosts a ton of people at your house for the beloved holiday, it can be an extremely stressful day. A day filled with work, cleaning and busyness.

Unfortunately, when your day is clouded by these negative feelings and anxiety producing situations, you are not able to enjoy it as much as you should. Thanksgiving happens only once a year and before you know it, the day is over and we are decorating for Christmas.

One of the things that I have been working on since becoming a minimalist is being in the moment. Reducing anything in my life, whether that be material things or people, that don’t allow me to truly enjoy the moment I am in.

This includes on a holiday.

This year, I have been searching for ways to not go over the top and bog myself down with plans and running around like a chicken with my head cut off. Instead, my Thanksgiving will be simple this year and will reflect the minimalist lifestyle I have embraced.

I want to share with you five ways that I am going to have a minimalist Thanksgiving! If you are trying to simplify your Thanksgiving and truly enjoy the day, these tips are for you!

Simplify Your Menu

There are so many delicious dishes that you can make for Thanksgiving. From sweet potato casserole and pumpkin pie to a million different vegetables, you could literally make 12 dishes and still have some to choose from. This year, choose four or five of your favorite dishes and make only them. Instead of baking a pumpkin, apple and pecan pie, choose the one you like the most and bake that. This will cut down on your stress and make the holiday a lot less busy.

Plan Ahead And Cook Only On That Day

Do not, I repeat do not, wait until the day before Thanksgiving to do your grocery shopping. The stores will be so unbelievably packed and it will take so long just to buy a few things. Make sure you have everything planned ahead of time so you aren’t running around right before the day. Wake up extra early on Thanksgiving and get the turkey in the oven so your entire week leading up to the holiday isn’t dedicated to time in the kitchen. This will severely cut down on your stress level.

Simplify Your Table Decor

It is so easy to go overboard and want to make every single table decoration you see on Pinterest. Trust me, I have tried to do this. In the end, I didn’t have nearly enough time to do as much as I wanted and I wound up busy and stressed out. Pick a simple theme, like a beautiful white table or only decorations at each seat, and have that be it. Your house doesn’t need to look like Thanksgiving threw up in it. (Mine has before and honestly, I hated it!) You will thank me later.

Reduce Your Plans Or Better Yet, Stay Home

I know this isn’t the popular choice for a holiday but if you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed, stay home. Put on your comfy clothes, wear those fuzzy slippers and cook with your family. If staying home isn’t your thing then cut down the plans that you have and only go to one place. Sometimes, we have so many people we want to see and are often pulled in a ton of different directions on Thanksgiving. Instead, make a conscious decision to only go to one place.

Remember What The Day Is Really About

Thanksgiving is a day to practice gratitude and to be grateful for the people in your life that you love. It is so easy to forget that Thanksgiving Day is not about the best table setting, the most pies or having every single person that you know come to your house. Spend the day reflecting on what is beautiful in your life and what brings you joy. Focus on simply spending time with your loved ones and let go of the other expectations. Sit down to dinner, put your phones away, have meaningful conversations and connect with the people around you. This, this is what Thanksgiving is really about.
